Pulp Anthem: Reflected Glory (2020)

a commission from Albany Symphony for its Dogs of Desire new music ensemble

"Pulp Anthem: Reflected Glory is a nurse's anthem. I refer to it as a Pulp Anthem because I composed it quickly, and because it is meant to be broadly distributed, like the old pulp paperback books of the twentieth century. The poem "Reflected Glory' was written by Margaret Helen Florine, an American nurse, and published in a 1917 collection of her poetry entitled "Songs of a Nurse." This piece is meant to remind us that the urgent work of nurses has long been in the shadows, but it is as vital and important in our current pandemic as it was a century ago."

Falling Skyward (2021)
"I composed Falling Skyward in February 2001 for a lecture-performance I presented, in collaboration with flutist Chris Pesko, at the University of Michigan SCOR (Students of Color at Rackham) academic conference. The conference theme was "Claiming Space," and examined the ways people of color inhabit and embody challenging narratives in academia. I wanted to compose a piece that responded to this conference theme, so I thought about how the notion of "Claiming Space" could be musically rendered."

Composers Now presents IMPACT. Each installment in this series offers a composer the opportunity to reflect on one's creativity, influences, pathways, and responsibility as a living artist in our ever-changing world. Designed for the virtual space, every session shares a composer's essential thoughts directly with you, the audience, in the safety and comfort of your own place.

These commentaries, interwoven with performance videos and other materials, articulate a creator's IMPACT.
