Tania León is opening the Spring 2016 NYU Department of Music Colloquium Series. The four leading scholars, performers, and composers in the series reflect the broad range of topical, methodological, and theoretical concerns propelling the multidisciplinary field of music and sound studies today.

León's lecture is titled "Border Crossings: Cultural Thresholds in the Syncretic Evolution of Music."

This event will be held in Silver Room 320 and will feature a 45-minute lecture followed by a Q&A discussion period. Venue is wheelchair accessible, and admission is free and open to the public.

Tania León, born in Cuba and a vital personality on today's music scene, is highly regarded as a composer and conductor recognized for her accomplishments as an educator and advisor to arts organizations. She has received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, Guggenheim, Fromm and Koussevitzky Foundations. A founding member of Dance Theatre of Harlem, she co-founded the ACO's Sonidos de las Americas Festivals, was new music adviser to Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic, and is the artistic director of Composers Now Festival.
