Great Yarmouth Community Trust is a multi-purpose, neighborhood based, community enterprise set up by local people in 2001 to support the area Sure Start program. We are based at the Priory Centre near St Nicholas Parish Church and in venues across the town.

We are part of a range of local and national networks, and part of a global movement of similar multi-purpose, neighborhood organizations. Great Yarmouth Community Trust works to build a local community where every individual, family and neighborhood can share in (and contribute to) the social and economic wealth of the borough. Barrio Planta Project, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Barrio Planta Project is an education initiative created to empower low-income children and adults living in Nicaragua. Through supplementary schooling with an emphasis on English as a Second Language and the creative arts, BPP provides means for international communication and exposure to enriching cultural activities that enhance confidence and facilitate community development. Dyani Markous helped found the organization.

"After spending several months living in Barrio La Planta, a fishing neighborhood in San Juan del Sur, I learned that local families who were previously benefiting from the fishing industry were being marginalized as the economy transitioned from fishing to tourism," Markous explains. "They did not have the work experience or education required to obtain the jobs that were becoming available in their town. The solution, they explained, was simple. They needed to learn English to get their foot in the door. As a native English speaker, it made sense that I could help them in that area. I was happy to have the opportunity to return their hospitality and started teaching free English classes to the children in the area. Within just a couple months, I had 60 kids and 20 adults and began including additional activities, such as art and sports. Eventually we were offered a community center and now host English and Computer classes along with Art, Dance, Vocational Training and Fitness programs all day, every day attended by over a hundred people in the community."

Originally founded in 1888, Riis Settlement is named in honor of the Danish-American social reformer Jacob Riis. During its early years, the agency served the burgeoning immigrant community in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Later, changing demographics and the city's call to service in the outer boroughs led, in 1950, to the agency's relocation to New York City Housing Authority's Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, the nation's largest public housing development. Since then, their mission has remained the same: to build and strengthen underserved communities in Western Queens and to act as a catalyst for change.

From eight sites throughout the community, including the headquarters in Queensbridge Houses, the community center of the Ravenswood public housing development and six other locations in public schools, Riis Settlement currently provides comprehensive services and programs to low income youth, families, immigrants and seniors. In the last 25 years, their operating budget has grown from $100,000 to $3.6 million. They have a committed Board of 16 directors, a staff of nearly 100 employees and programming that serves more than 750 people a day. Riis Settlement has instituted aggressive communications and fund development activities which utilize social media, an agency website, annual reports, newsletters, special events and regular appeals. Former Director of Development and Communications, Christopher Hanway, assumed the role of Executive Director on August 1, 2013 and has significantly grown the organization's operations and reach into the community
