New School College Credit

EARN A COLLEGE DEGREE

Graduates of the CAP21 2-Year Professional Musical Theatre and Summer Professional Musical Theatre Training Programs can now transfer academic credits towards a bachelor's degree from The New School for Public Engagement – a division of The New School.

"Learning across disciplines is a fundamental New School value—a value our new collaboration with CAP21 expands in a significant way," said David Scobey, Executive Dean of The New School for Public Engagement. "We are thrilled to offer performers the opportunity to develop technical skills to hone their talents, combined with an in-depth understanding of the theory behind the craft."

THE DETAILS

Graduates of the 2-Year professional Musical Theatre Training Program or the Summer Professional Musical Theatre Training Program must have a 3.0 GPA from CAP21 to be eligible. A completed online application, along with the required application essays, professional resume, and official transcripts from CAP21 and any other college/university attended must be submitted as part of the application process. Complete application instructions can be found at www.newschool.edu/nspe/undergrad.

CAP21 graduates who apply and are accepted to The New School for Public Engagement will transfer academic credits towards a bachelor's degree, as follows:

  • 2-Year Professional Musical Theatre Program: 63 total transfer credits (3 liberal arts and 60 non-liberal arts). Up to 21 additional transfer credits may be awarded from other colleges/universities attended.
  • Summer Professional Musical Theatre Program: 6 non-liberal arts transfer credits. Up to 78 additional transfer credits may be awarded from other colleges/universities attended.

Accepted students will work closely with an academic advisor to design a curriculum based on their individual interests and goals. Courses can be taken on-campus in New York City, online, or through a combination of both. All bachelor's degrees require 120 total credits to graduate.

While the curriculum is entirely self-designed, it is important to note that a maximum of 60 "non-liberal arts" credits can be applied towards a bachelor's degree. Thus, graduates of the 2-Year Professional Musical Theatre Training Program must complete all remaining credits in "liberal arts" subject areas, which include disciplines such as writing, psychology, cultural studies, politics, foreign languages, and history. Graduates of the Summer Professional Musical Theatre Training Program can take up to 54 additional credits in "non-liberal arts" subject areas, which include things such as business, acting, film production, dance, and studio art. There is no limit on the number of "liberal arts" credits taken towards the bachelor's degree.

The New School offers financial aid to U.S. citizens and international students based on both need and merit.
