Project HOPE

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, University Settlement was chosen as one of 17 citywide agencies to provide free, confidential crisis counseling and resource linkages for New York City residents impacted by the storm. In 2013 alone, we helped 500 families with applications to FEMA and partnered with United Neighborhood Houses of New York and the Robin Hood Foundation to provide $75,000 in emergency grants directly to our neighbors in need. With our door-to-door outreach and workshops, we reached more than 40,000 people and built an emergency call list for future disasters comprised of more than 600 neighbors. 

Project Hope closed at the end of February 2014, but we recognize that recovery from Hurricane Sandy continues. New Yorkers with lingering stress can reach out to the following resources:

  • LifeNet: LifeNet offers free and confidential mental health and substance abuse information, referral and crisis hotline services for NYC residents, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
