Swim Escort

Supervisor: Site Manager


Overview: University Settlement is one of New York City's most dynamic social justice institutions, with an impressive legacy as the first settlement house in the nation. For 130 years, University Settlement has been an anchor in the low-income and immigrant communities where we work, offering pioneering programs in early childhood care and education, youth development, eviction prevention, literacy, theater and visual arts, senior services, and mental health. Each year, we engage over 40,000 New Yorkers through our network of 32 sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Our mission is to empower residents by building on their strengths through comprehensive, quality services that meet the current needs of the community; innovation that anticipates future needs; and advocacy to improve the community as a whole.

University Settlement, established in 1886, operates a 42,000 square-foot community facility in partnership with the Chinatown YMCA called the Houston Street Center. The Center includes recreational, fitness, classroom, meeting and space for the community and offers a broad range of programming including our Swim N Kids program- which provides swim instruction for children and our EXCEL Program -which provides swim instruction for children with special needs. We also provide swim instruction for children from various different community groups through our Community Partnership Program Under the supervision of trained and certified Swim Instructors and Lifeguards, the Swim Escort will provide assistance in the pool during swim classes for children with varying needs.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide in-pool assistance to swim instructors during swim classes
  • Provide encouragement and support to swimmers
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications:

  • At least a high school diploma or equivalent required
  • Strong swimming skills and/or confidence and comfort in the water
  • Ability to tread water in deep water and/or high comfort level with being in deep water with a flotation device for 45 minutes
  • Experience working with young children (ages 4-6) in an educational and/or recreational setting. Experience working with children with special needs, preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work on weekends preferred but not required

Hours: 1 hour per week


Salary: 15.00/hour depending on experience
