Tutor (Part time)

Each year, we engage over 40,000 New Yorkers through our network of 30 sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Our mission is to empower the individuals we serve through comprehensive, quality services that strengthen families and meet the current needs of the community.
University Settlement's Talent Search program seeks to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school or equivalent and enroll in post-secondary education institutions of their choice. The program is hosted at University Settlement's sister agency The Door, whose mission is to empower young people to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment.
Part-time math and English tutors will play a critical goal in helping students achieve their academic goals, including passing New York State's high school equivalency exam (the TASC), passing the New York State Regents, scoring at a college-ready level on the CUNY entrance exams, or improving their SAT scores. Tutors work with students one- on- one or in small group sessions, providing academic support in a subject area of their choice. Tutoring requires patience, perseverance, and strong interpersonal skills. Occasionally, tutors will need to detour from the main subject area in order to keep up the energy of a tutoring session. Tutoring is provided to The Door's after-school tutoring program and High School Equivalency program.
Tutors should be comfortable in one or both of the following content areas:
oBasic math, word problems, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability/statistics
oReading comprehension, essay writing, grammar
Students will generally be preparing for one of the following exams, so prior familiarity is preferred:
oNew York State Regents
oThe Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC), New York State's high school equivalency exam
•Conduct weekly sessions with students who request or are assigned to tutoring
•Deliver tutoring in one-on-one or small group sessions, depending on need
•Check in with supervisor regarding the progress of each student
•Attend periodic meetings with classroom teachers and other program staff to coordinate instruction
•Maintain basic documentation (sign-in sheet) for all tutoring sessions
•Other tasks as assigned by supervisor
•High school diploma or equivalent required, current college students with strong academic records in the content area you intend to tutor are welcome
•Interest in working with urban youth, and sensitivity to the needs and interests of the diverse young people who comprise The Door's membership population
•Knowledgeable of and able to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
•Prior work or volunteer experience with adolescents preferred
•Bi-lingual a plus (French, Spanish or Chinese preferred)
•Basic computer skills
HOURS AND COMMITMENT:
•Tutors in our After-School program should be available Monday – Friday 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00AM- 4PM
•Tutors in our High School Equivalency program will work a flexible schedule Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
•It is possible to work in one or both programs. Please indicate your availability in your cover letter.
•Positions are available for a minimum of 6-8 hours per week for up to 20 hours per week. This is a temporary, part-time position grant-funded through this school year..
