Teacher's Aide

Overview: University Settlement is one of New York City's most dynamic social justice institutions, with an impressive legacy as the first settlement house in the nation. Each year, we engage over 40,000 New Yorkers through our network of 31 sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Our mission is to empower the individuals we serve through comprehensive, quality services that strengthen families and meet the current needs of the community.

The Children's Corner Day Care Center is a publicly funded full day, full year child care center with newly renovated classrooms and wonderful roof-top playground and garden. Located in East New York, Brooklyn, it serves children from 2 -5 years of age. The program aims at providing a nurturing and stimulating environment that will prepare children to enter Kindergarten with the fundamental skills to succeed in school.


  • Under the guidance of the Head Teacher, participates in planning and completing assignments that support daily classroom programs and activities
  • Collaborates with the Head Teacher in writing daily and weekly lesson plans
  • Ensures a proper level of availability and condition in maintaining classroom equipment and supplies
  • Assists in recruiting parent volunteers and provides support to volunteers working in the classroom
  • Provides assistance with writing required reports and completing various forms
  • Enters written observations, work samples and photos into online database system that generates individualized service reports for each child
  • Assists with arranging field trips, home visits and ordering supplies and materials
  • Attends and participates in staff and parent meetings and in training and development sessions
  • Performs other related duties as required


  • High School Diploma or HSE required; college experience or diploma preferred
  • Experience working with children
  • Must be comfortable using a computer and accessing the Internet

Hours: 35 hours per week

Salary: Low 20s plus benefits package
