Learning Disabilities

What is LD?
A learning disability (LD) is a neurobiological disorder that presents as a serious difficulty with reading, arithmetic, and/or written expression that is unexpected given the individual's intellectual ability. LD affects the brain's ability to process information in a normal way. If inadequately or improperly evaluated a learning disability has the potential to lead to a dysfunctional life.

Learning disabilities have nothing to do with how smart a child is, many are above average in intelligence.

Children with learning disabilities exhibit a wide range of symptoms including problems with reading, math, comprehension and organizational skills.

When a child is struggling in school or in daily life and a learning disability is suspected, an evaluation of neuropsychological abilities is necessary to determine which brain functions are not working as expected and which brain functions are working adequately and reliably. Early identification and intervention optimizes educational success and minimizes behavioral consequences.
